Can you feel it? It's in the air, or at least in any online community where people are discussing the next and much anticipated Reason update. So let's take a quick trip down memory lane and set the stage for Reasonistas' "scientific" prediction of which Reason update is next and when it will be released.
In the "Reason 8.3 is here" blog post dated June 30, 2015, Leo Nathorst-Böös of Propellerhead ended his post with "Before I sign off I just want to say a big thank you to everybody who's been involved in making it happen: developers, designers, sound makers, testers. You know who you are. Now I'm off for vacation, then work begins on Reason 8.4".
Reading the end of Leo's post would have most people surmise that the next Reason update is version 8.4. However, if we take a look at the following Reason version update history, you may, as I have, conclude that the next Reason version update may actually be 9.0, not 8.4.
Why? Well let's begin with the fact that it took Propellerheads 19 months to update Reason from version 6 to version 7 and another 17 months to update from version 7 to version 8. Now I know some of you are thinking there was update version 6.5 between 6 and 7 and more recently update version 8.3 after 8. Yes, that's true, but these were only partial version updates released essentially to introduce Rack Extensions and the Re Shop (6.5 release notes) and the RV7000 MkII and several other key improvements (8.3 release notes).
If we continue to study the historical time between major updates (version 1, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, etc.), it stands to reason (pun intended) that Reason is long overdue for a full version update. It's quite possible Propellerheads decided to forego another "point update", skip version 8.4 and move right into version 9.0 to add major features often requested by the Reason community.
Of course this is pure speculation based on Reason's version update history, but I think we're onto something and predict with some degree of confidence that Reason 9.0 will be released at the end of June 2016 or somewhere in that neighborhood. This will make it 21 months since version 8.0
